The Spirit of Perverseness
- adapted from Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat
Pluto --this was the cat's name --was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets.
Our friendship lasted, in this manner, for several years, during which my general temperament and character --through the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance --had (I blush to confess it) experienced a radical alteration for the worse. I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my At length, I even offered her personal violence. My pets, of course, were made to feel the change in my disposition. I not only neglected, but ill-used them. For Pluto, however, I still retained sufficient regard to restrain me from maltreating him, as I made no scruple of maltreating the rabbits, the monkey, or even the dog, when by accident, or through affection, they came in my way. But my disease grew upon me --for what disease is like Alcohol! --and at length even Pluto, who was now becoming old, and consequently somewhat peevish --even Pluto began to experience the effects of my ill temper.
............
One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town, I fancied that the cat avoided my presence. I seized him; when, in his fright at my violence, he inflicted a slight wound upon my hand with his teeth. The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself no longer. My original soul seemed, at once, to take its flight from my body; and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin-nurtured, thrilled every fibre of my frame. I took from my waistcoat-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket! I blush, I burn, I shudder, while I pen the damnable atrocity.
............
And then came, as if to my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of PERVERSENESS. Of this spirit philosophy takes no account. Yet I am not more sure that my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart --one of the indivisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of Man. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my final overthrow. It was this unfathomable longing of the soul to vex itself --to offer violence to its own nature --to do wrong for the wrong's sake only --that urged me to continue and finally to consummate the injury I had inflicted upon the unoffending brute.

Such a pity that the track and field meet ended so quickly. I'd been anticipating this day for ages and it all just flashed past in a matter of hours. All of us (the Arts fac) had an awesome time at the meet today and cheered till we almost lost our voices! Xm, Liting, Chongwen, Meeshell, Eileen etc. and I were so engrossed yelling and clapping continuously and a few of us were even wildly jumping up and down by the edge of the track. Im still feeling paralysed from all that overwhelming passion and enthusiasm, and the deafening chorus of cheers. The Arts Fac clearly stood out from all the other faculties throughout the entire meet! All the Science buggers were either slacking or engaging in their own pathetic chatters while all the Arts people were up on their feet, shouting to the max, clapping thunderously, and booing the Science facs the entire time. Remarkably incredible to see the resurrection of the Arts spirit! Be it J1s or J2s, everyone was so completely undivided - rooting the competitors, applauding continuously, some even grooving to the music. With such an exceptional spectacle, I just couldnt resist experiencing an emotional outburst. That sense of belonging to the college, and particularly the Arts fac fully captivated me! At that moment, i couldnt help feeling so touched and also extremely proud to be part of the Arts Fac! Conformity is Dead!
More importantly, we Arts Fac girls emerged champions! And it's the 13th consecutive year that we Arts Fac's girls firmly grabbed the title! Hurray!!! Although the overall champion faculty went to Science D, it's still victory for us! The 03A02/3/4 and 02A03/4 guys who ran the 12x100m today had proven themselves to be true men, clinching 2nd and 3rd place respectively! Whoohoo! Even the 03A02 girls who ran this race were fabulous! It's thanks to them that our points were boosted against the stiff competition and allowed us to take home 1st place! Yeeha! O, and the staff race was so entertaining! Mr Young could really run! We initially didnt believe Ms Kon when she said that Silas Marner could run fast, but we were absolutely taken aback when we witnessed how he sprinted all the way! it was totally baffling but nevertheless, we still roared for him! All of a sudden, it seemed as if everyone regarded him as their idol. Hahahaha...Anyway, the Arts spirit was evidently dominant and its great to know how much we all feel for the Arts Fac!
O well, now that it's all over, we can only wait till the Sea Carnival for another round of the Arts' action and zeal! Hopefully our class will get through the dragonboat heats and bring more glory to our fac! In the meantime, i'll be recuperating from my hoarse voice and swollen palms!

B for Bball!
Woah, its been an exhausting week. Our last match finally ended today and we're all so relieved! Fortunately the girls' matches were held this week...i wouldnt hope for it to drag any longer, especially after track and field meet. The guys were supposed to play their first match against JJ today but o well, it's been postponed to Saturday. Wonder if i should go down to support them...or rather, him? We'll see how it goes la. If the rest are going down, i'd probably tag along.
Anyway, even though we didnt manage to win a single match, we're all still pretty unaffected probably cos we had expected it. Perhaps with the exception of today, where anger levels rose to the max. The SFMS team were such an arrogant lot. Not to mention that they were extremely violent and rough too. Almost everyone of us got badly hit, knocked and pushed by them, and poor Xm even got her knee injured after that blardy no. 8 deliberately collided into her! GRR. Hopefully they'll get trashed by SA. O and i must really congratulate the latter for defeating HCJC! Marvellous performance! Too bad we werent present to catch the action. Sigh.
Hmm i must admit that despite all the tough competition and weariness, our team has evidently grown closer. Ok, maybe from my perspective. I didnt really know Jasmine, Esther etc. and the juniors well initially, but after 4 days of travelling together from one end of S'pore to the other, most of the awkwardness has dissolved and everybody's crappier side starts to take over. Although there was some apparent friction and antagonism between Jasmine and Yanling yesterday, they've resolved it peacefully and made up. It's such a hearwarming experience to cheer for and encourage each other, and it all makes us feel so at home. All this has been a very fulfilling and memorable episode. It suddenly feels emptier and quieter now that there'll be fewer or even no trainings (although im grateful that i dont have to run 1.6km for warmups anymore) for the rest of the year. I wonder when we could all relive such times again. Well, i must say now that i dont regret joining the bball team cos all of them have certainly brightened up my J2 life! I know it sounds cheesy, but its true! 3 cheers for the bball team!
P.S.: Yeah its T&F meet tomorrow! Hopefully Arts Fac will still continue to maintain the top position and lead us all to Victory! Topple the Sciences!!! CONFORMITY IS DEAD.

Another year has passed, another stage in life. Boy wonder what it feels like to be 18. I dont think there's much of a diff in meeshell's case though, that sealion alter-ego would probably still continue to dominate...haha. O well, i guess it better to be more optimistic eh? Be it 17 or 18, meeshell will still be as cute as ever! ;D Anyway, i hope things for her will improve soon. Its really upsetting to see a buddy like that. Hey babe, do cheer up! We all still love you as much as ever! Hope you like the card...i promise to give you the present as soon as im done with it ok? And in the meantime, i think we all ought to decide on a proper date for the bbq! We can never seem to fix an exact date...that's terrible! Meeshell's birthday would be long overdue by then! And im awfully missing all you guys so much already!!! O, how thy heart pines for true love, yet spared none! Prithee, take worthy pity on thy wounded creature! Haha... Have a Blessed Bday and Many Happy Returns Bibi!
